FOREWORD
Once again we present the book of proceedings of a NAPRECA Natural Products Symposium. This 11th NAPRECA symposium book of proceedings has many quality presentation reports which are a reflection of how research in the field in the region has developed by leaps and bounds since NAPRECA was formed in 1984. The improving quality of presentations from symposium to symposium is remarkable considering that the research facilities at NAPRECA member institutes have not changed concomitantly except in a few cases such as at the University of Botswana where requisite instrumentation is virtually optimal. Rather what must have increased is the level of collaboration intra-regionally and internationally. Such a bonding of researchers has been greatly helped by these biannual conferences which have been facilitated by our gracious donors-IPICS and IFS of Sweden, DAAD of Germany, UNESCO and OPCW as in the case of this symposium and the ten others before; we are highly indebted to them.
NAPRECA Symposia continue to attract participants from many parts of the world other than the region alone. In this edition there are several reports by participants from industry and academia of Europe, America and Asia who took part very strongly in the proceedings at the symposium. Their presence at the meeting really added a lot of substance to the stature of the NAPRECA Symposia. We highly welcome their involvement with us which we hope will grow even stronger in the future. The papers in this book contributed by these senior researchers are quite informative and will help as good reference to the upcoming scientists in the region.
I would like to recognize the hard work by individuals which has led to the production of this informative booklet. Professor Phillipe Rasoanaivo and his team were wonderful hosts to all of us who attended the Symposium in Antananarivo, which they did a very good job organising. Special recognitions go to my colleagues, Dr. Abiy Yenesew and Dr. Solomon Derese for combing through the papers and making the document presentable.
Finally I would like to appreciate and thank all those who took part in the Symposium and have contributed articles for publication and welcome them all to participate with new results and ideas at the 12th NAPRECA Symposium to be held in Kinshasa, Congo in July 2007.
Prof. Jacob O Midiwo. NAPRECA Executive Secretary.
