A. About NAPRECA

The Natural Products Research Network for Eastern and Central Africa is a non political, non-governmental and non-profit scientific body that is devoted to the study, promotion and development of Science of natural products including their botany, chemistry, biological activities, economic exploitation and conservation. NAPRECA was established with the aim of promoting cooperation among scientists within Eastern and Central Africa so that they contribute effectively to the development of science of Natural products within the region. 

B. Conference Topics: The general topics to be covered at the conference include: Indigenous knowledge and medicinal plants, Botanical identification, crude bioassay, fractionation of crude extracts, isolation of compounds, structural identification, product development and value addition, policy and IPR and Biotrade; Ethics of Drug development, Bioprospecting and Biotechnology, New Trends in Chromatographic Separation Techniques, Modern Methods of Structural Analysis of Natural Products.....

 

C. Pre-Conference Workshop topics: Identification of medicinal Plants, new trends in Chromatographic separation techniques and Modern Methods of Structural Analysis of Natural Products’. The subtopics under this theme would include: Plant identification (taxonomic, chemotaxonomy, Morphological, pharmacological or therapeutic, and Alphabetical); Taxonomic characters; ethnosystematics of African traditional medicine; Phytochemistry; chromatographic techniques and modern methods of Structural Analysis of Natural Products.

D. Conference Language: English is the official language of the conference. No simultaneous translation service will be provided. All presentations, including discussions and submitted materials, must be in English.

E. Call for Abstracts: There will be plenary, oral and poster presentations at the Symposium. Plenary lectures will be by invitation only. The length of the lectures will be 40 minutes for plenary lectures and 20 minutes for oral presentations during the technical session.

Abstract should be in English and not exceed 250 words written in MS Word or a compatible format. State the name(s) of author(s) [the name of presenting author should be underlined], institute, city, country and email address (if any).

Poster space will be limited to 80 cm by 120 cm for each poster. Poster presenters will be required to give 2-3 minute summaries of their posters at the beginning of the poster sessions

 

Abstract should be sent as an attached file by e-mail to the Conference Organizing committee (rbyamukama@chemistry.mak.ac.ug, mkamatenesi@botany.mak.ac.ug and paulssegawa@yahoo.com, horyem-origa@botany.mak.ac.ug, ayenesew@uonbi.ac.ke) not later than 31st May 2007. The format and guidelines for submitting the abstract are described below.

Conference Publication

A Book of Abstracts containing abstracts of all lectures and posters will be distributed to all participants upon registration at the Conference desk. Full papers based on the invited plenary lectures as well as oral and poster presentations will be published in the proceedings of the 12th Natural Products Research for Eastern and Central Africa (NAPRECA) Conference.

The full papers of actual plenary, oral and poster presentations should be submitted to the Secretariat in an electronic form and a hard copy before the end of the conference.

Instruction for Preparation of Abstracts

Language

All abstracts must be written in English.

Page Layout

The size of the published page is 21.0 x 29.7 cm (A4). The abstract body must not exceed 250 words. Margins should be set at 2.5cm top and bottom, 2.0cm both sides. The typing should use the whole width of the page and in Times New Roman font.

Title and Author(s)

The title of the abstract should be typed in Title case, font size 16 point. One line space should be left, then authors’ names (first name, middle initial(s) and family name) typed in lower case, 12pt, and centered. Superscript letters should be used to indicate authors with different affiliations. The name of the presenting author should be underlined. One line space should be left, then the authors’ affiliations (preceded if appropriate by the superscript letter) typed in italics 10pt, centered. The address of at least the presenting author should be followed by an E-mail address.

Text

Allow one line space between affiliation and text. The main text of the abstract should be prepared in the Microsoft Word format in font size 12 with single line spacing. The abstract should be in one paragraph. Use only commonly well known abbreviations and if others abbreviations must be used please explains them the first time they appear. Any graphics, pictures, formulas, schemes may be included and chemical drawings should be done in ChemDraw.

Page layout-

Title of Paper

Use Title case and written in bold, 16pt.

 

Authors

Authors’ names (first name, middle initial(s) and family name) typed in lower case, 12pt, and their affiliations typed in italics 10pt, all centered. Superscript letters should be used to indicate authors with different affiliations. Indicate name to which correspondence is to be addressed with an asterisk superscript, and give postal and E-mail addresses.

Format of the Paper

The body of the paper should contain the abstract, introduction (brief review of current literature and a statement indicating objectives of the research undertaken) experimental (a description of materials, instrumentation procedures etc) results and discussion, conclusion, acknowledgement and references. Use SI units and formulae and equations should be arranged to fit adequately the width of a single column in a two column page.

References

References should be numbered in order of their appearance in the text. They should be cited in the text by use of numbers in superscripts at the end of sentence. They should be in sequence at the end of the text with the authors’ names (surname, initial), year (in brackets), abbreviated title of journal (in italics), volume number (bold), first and last pages, E.g.

F. Registration Fees: Registration Fees are as follows:

  • Registration fees US $200
  • Registration fees for Students/ NAPRECA members US $100
  • Accompanying Person US $100

The fees will entitle participants to conference lunches, tea, conference bags, conference mixer, and transportation between hotels and conference venue. Accompanying persons are entitled to enter the Opening Ceremony, Welcome Reception and Cocktail Night.

A written confirmation of your pre-registration will be sent to you by E-mail, once your registration notification has been received.

Application and payment:  Please fill out registration form (attached) and send it to registration office of the conference. All payment must be in US$ (For non-Ugandans) and in Uganda shillings (For Ugandans). Bank drafts, money orders or cash money must be payable to the 12th Natural Products Research for Eastern and Central Africa (NAPRECA) Conference, Faculty of Science, Botany Department, Makerere University, Kampala, Uganda. Personal cheques will not be accepted. The name of the registrant should be indicated on the bank draft or money order. You will receive confirmation of registration.

 

G. Accommodations: Makerere University Guesthouse and other hotels in Kampala City will be available for participants. The rates of accommodation costs are included in the table below.

Excursion

I.                  Excursion:

There will be an excursion to Bujagari falls and source of the River Nile in Jinja and to Entebbe Wildlife Education centre. Guests will choose which site to visit. The Excursion will cost US $ 30
